I want to urge you to participate in CULTURE IN THE CITY, which debuted Wednesday, April 5, 2006 with Jim D eFede. Culture in the City has consistently made it into TODAY’S AGENDA in The Miami Herald.  Our schedule has been featured in Miami New Times and other periodicals.  Our exciting programming seeks to enhance culture in South Florida, to spread the word about the arts, literature, science, philosophy, religion and other opportunities as I have tried to do by means of my CULTURAL BULLETIN. Jan. 28:  Miami International Film Festival – Poster Unveiling at the
Freedom Tower — 11:00 a.m. – Packed room – all the film folks were
there [MIFF 27 is Mar. 5-14]. Executive Director Vivian Rodriguez spoke enthusiastically, Dr. Padron (he of the 10 best University Presidents in the
U.S.) graciously welcomed dignitaries (and everyone) and thanked sponsors. 
The Festival Poster by artist/friend/MDC grad Carlos Betancourt was unveiled to enthusiastic “oohs & aahs” which surprised Carlos, since he is
accustomed to the seriousness (and silence) of museums and
galleries, but he confessed he was thrilled with the experience; then,
he explained that his design was part of his 2009 series on connection
(what better for a panorama of world films that connect us to other places
and people).
Then, Film Festival Artistic Director Tiziana Finzi regaled the gathering on all the wonderful choices among 115 films from 45 countries, including 5
world premieres, 22 North American premieres, and 14 U.S. premieres.

February 6:  WRITERS:  Don’t forget. First Saturday means the South Florida Writers Assn. (SFWA) invites the public to its members only readings from 10-noon at the Coral Gables/South Miami Elks Club, 6304 SW 78 St., South Miami, FL Please indicate whether you are reading when you register online at our Website (http://www.southfloridawritersassn.org/) or with Nathalie Breton,  Phone: (305) 598-2690 or  e-mail: thaliebreton@gmail.com by Thursday, Feb. 4.  Members will have only 5 minutes to show us a sample of their work, but this is usually an inspiring meeting at which the diversity of our members’ work shines. Cost $8-which includes breakfast. Meet and network with other writers.  [A good opportunity for budding agents] 

intricate sand sculpture is chanted by four Tibetan

monks after introductions.  The lead monk explains

that the key is compassion; we need others and we need

to show compassion for others.  The Mandala is a symbol

of impermanence; life is impermanence and change.

Each monk dons a yellow/gold headdress and each of

 has either bells or cymbals.  As the chanting begins,

the two monks on either end clasp their bells tightly

to their robes (to keep the clappers silent) while the

second from the left (as I face them) rings his bell

simultaneously with the cymbal of the lead monk.  

The faces of the gathered crowd beam in rapt

attention, some with eyes closed and hands clasped

in prayer, others silently watching.  Then all the monks

ring bells together as the lead monk circles the table

with the Mandala three times.  He pinches sand

from the center of the Mandala, then from the four

corners of the inner quadrant.  He then makes lines

dividing/erasing the Mandala clockwise, first into

quarters, then into eighths.  Another monk uses a

four inch brush as a broom and with curved strokes

all but obliterating the intricate pattern, brushing the

rainbow-colored sands (still clockwise) toward the center.

The Mandala is reduced to a small hill of colored

sand in the middle of the table; about a pint of this

is swept into a ceremonial vessel/urn which is covered

by a crown with decorations (to be returned to a

nearby pool or stream of water).  Rice is tossed onto

the table by all four monks while they continue

chanting.  A clattering of cymbals marks the end

of the ceremony.  The monks remove their headdresses.

The ceremony ends.

Sacred sand from the Mandala is gathered into

tiny plastic bags for the observer/participants gathered

for the closing ceremony.
